"Can't" Just Won't

Telling yourself you can't do something, even if it's a whispered phrase in the back of your mind, really won't do anything for you, supermoms.  Be your own promoter with encouragements that you CAN!

Super Swaps

I love finding swaps for naughty foods!  It leaves me being able to enjoy "treats" but without the guilt, making it that much easier to stay on track.  After doing a low-carb, non-dairy cleanse to support a friend, I picked up a few more.  Here is my current list of favorites:

--roasted, sliced carrots for sweet potato fries
--lettuce for tortillas
--roasted, cubed butternut for potatoes
--Greek yogurt for sour cream
--ground buffalo for ground beef and/or turkey
--pizza with half the cheese
--roasted kale or cabbage for rice with Asian-style dishes
--quinoa for rice
--roasted spaghetti squash for half or all of pasta
--build up your spaghetti sauce with extra veggies like mushrooms and spinach
--make your own sauces with fresher ingredients like tartar sauce and salsas

Try to find a small swap here or there in your weekly menu.  A small change here or there can start to add up BIG in your calorie-count!

Disciplined by Diaz

In her new book, Body Book, Cameron Diaz shares her thoughts about health and wellness in a surprisingly frank way.  I do enjoy her straight talk on these issues, and especially appreciated her comments on the idea of self-discipline.  Isn't it so true that we often view discipline (dieting, workout routines, etc) as a source of punishment?  Read the words below, supermoms, for a different take on the notion:

"Discipline isn't about denying yourself; it's about giving to yourself.  It isn't about losing; it's about gaining.  Every day that I get up early...to go to the gym, even if it's difficult and I'd rather stay in bed, I think about what will will I gain from going to the gym and what will I lose if I don't.  Nine times out of 10, I will only gain by going and lose by not going.  Discipline is always a gain in the tallying of life."

It's the Hard That Makes It Good

Fly, supermoms...

"If you want to be really good at something, it's going to involve relentlessly pushing past your comfort zone, along with frustration, struggle, setbacks and failures. That's true as long as you want to continue to improve, or even maintain a high level of excellence. The reward is that being really good at something you've earned through your own hard work can be immensely satisfying."

Fake It!

Not feeling so super lately?  Ugh, me either!  The holiday pounds are sticking around, and so is this miserable head cold!  What to do...

...it's in these low moments that it's sometimes just easier to fake it!  Pull yourself up out of the muckety-muck by putting a smile on your face, instead of wearing that grimace.  Keep up a positive dialogue with yourself, rather than letting the blues get the best of you.  Not feeling up to faking your way through?  Head outside for a run or walk to sweep away the cobwebs in your head.  Hey, if it's a bit chilly and brisk, you'll even get an added calorie-burn from just trying to stay warm!

Researchers have found that this time of year tends to be when more of us are feeling a bit down:  the holidays are over yet their bills are just coming in, it's cold, and the weather's gloomy.  If you're feeling the impact, don't get worn down, supermoms!  If it takes faking a sunny disposition to lift your spirits over the next couple of months, then do it.  If nothing else, those around you will probably find your glow refreshing and uplifting.  Spring and summer are almost here, so fake it till you make it!

This Much is True

Sometimes I don't want to admit it...sometimes, it just doesn't feel like it could be true...but, when I really look around me at all that I have...when I take a good look at myself and see all that I am, I can truly say the following words say it all. I truly hope they ring true for you, too, supermoms!

Habitual Offenders

"Bad habits are like a comfortable bed, easy to get into, but hard to get out of...bad habits start because you let them...good habits start because you make them." --Shonee Pass

Like my after-dinner snacking that I've FINALLY put an end to! What are some habits that you could live without?

In Other Words...

...don't give up on yourself:

"To achieve your desired goal, you must see and believe it is possible before you begin! Mentally possess what you are desiring to accomplish when you start your journey. Then, proceed with full confidence that you will succeed, if you keep your focus, attitude, and effort." --George Zalucki
